Jameson Montgomery is a stylist and designer who came to NYC when he was 18 to study merchandising, but quickly realized he wanted to do more than sell clothes. As he grew more frustrated with the fashion system (and capitalism in general), he wondered if it was possible to make beautiful clothes without hurting people or the planet. We caught up with him as the second feature in our new style profile series where we feature creatives with captivating style. You mentioned that you have your own clothing project, how did that come to be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nausicca is my clothing project with my design partner Richard Gray. The name came from Homer’s Odyssey; Nausicca rescued the shipwrecked Odysseus while washing clothes in the sea. Our first collection focused on commonly discarded items like concert tees, business shirts, and gym shorts, and upcycling them into new forms \u2014 rescuing them from landfills like Nausicca rescued Odysseus.<\/p>\n

How would you describe your style?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dressing is a powerful form of nonverbal communication, and I hope to convey that I value beauty, history, and humanity. As the world changes, so do I. Watershed moments for me style-wise included moving to New York (where I finally felt confident exploring sexuality and sensuality) and taking my first contemporary art course (seeing the infinite different ways people approach form and function). I don’t know if it’s the political situation, but lately I’ve been romanticizing times before I was born, and playing with traditional silhouettes. Calling fashion art is tricky depending upon the designer’s intent, but there’s clearly a group of people designing more artfully than others. I could go on forever but all-time faves include Prada, Comme, Marc Jacobs (so underrated), and Margiela.<\/p>\n

What advice would you give to someone looking to find their style?
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

My advice would be to just learn as much as possible about the world and it will fill itself in. Always read something new, look for new music, watch new movies, and look for new experiences.<\/p>\n
