Replete with her kaleidoscopic mix of high octane hues and dizzying motifs, Stephanie Dorceant’s panache for clashing patterns cull sophistication within chromatic cacophony. With her truly captivating style, one that we can all learn from,\u00a0\u00a0I had the exciting opportunity to chat with Stephanie in order to decipher the method behind her mien.<\/em><\/p>\n

Where do you get your inspiration from?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The 80s, 90s and shows like A Different World<\/em>, Fresh Prince<\/em>, etc. Also living in New York and especially Brooklyn gives me access to a variety of different looks that I like to play with. It’s no surprise that New York is one of the top fashion capitals of the world and being exposed to all the unique styles that surround you everywhere you go has definitely helped influence my style. But my need for bold and vivid colors in my wardrobe is definitely due to my Caribbean background (Haitian and Cuban) along with being born in one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in the US: Miami!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Who are some of your favorite designers?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I don’t really follow designer or the fashion world, I tend to focus on independent designers, I go to Beacon’s Closet, 75% of my clothes are from there. And if something catches my eye I walk in and get it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How has your style evolved and what (if at all) do you find to be uniquely queer about it?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

When I was living in Miami, I was into the whole glamorous style of the city. When I moved to NY I chose to cut my hair and wanted to be more comfortable than anything else. I also got welcomed into the world of thrift shopping. I guess that’s why my style has changed a little bit. I don’t know what makes my fashion queer, but thats what people tend to notice.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you could create a playlist that best describes your personal style what would be on that soundtrack?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0A mash up of ’80s, 90s throw back music, hip hop, punk and a little soft punk.\u00a0\u00a0Maybe some independent artists like SBRKT, Flying Lotus, Depford Goth and Major Lazor. Also, a lot of London-based artists.\u00a0\u00a0I don’t know if that illustrates my style but that\u2019s what I listen to. ..<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What’s your favorite all season essential?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m always wearing patterned jackets and anything with a colorful motif that I could clash with whatever.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What item can’t you live with out?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Patterned jackets, but above all, comfort is my number one priority.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How much does visual art play into your look and are there any artists whose style you aspire to?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Basquiat, I love his work, he\u00a0\u00a0was one of those artists that didn’t really care about what everyone else was doing or thinking. He has a Haitian background and he was a black artist, so I feel can relate to him.\u00a0Visuals do play a major part in my style. As an artist (writer, photographer, filmmaker), aesthetics are extremely important to me along with originality and being unique!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
