Petra Cortright is an artist who specializes in the\u00a0creation of digital files such as videos, GIFs, or jpegs, using consumer or corporate software and platforms. She obtained notoriety through her lo-fi self-portrait videos<\/a>\u00a0that she made using her webcam and default effect tools on her computer. Her intriguing videos often consist of bizarre collages that walk the line between disturbing and hilarious, and she is known to record herself while scrolling through different effects on her device. \u00a0The result is the creation of a 90’s alter-universe that metaphorically explores the nature and performance of online consumption (but you’ll be the judge). Is it all bad?<\/p>\n

Petra’s inaugural New York solo exhibition ily<\/em>\u00a0(an abbreviation for ‘I love you’) will take place at Foxy Production<\/a> from February 6 until March 7, 2015. The opening reception is Friday, February 6, from 6-8pm at 623 West 27th Street, NYC.<\/p>\n

“[I love you]\u00a0comprises a series of paintings on reflective Plexiglas that combine both abstract marks and repeated figures. The works are produced using a unique printing technique that involves the application of many layers of intense pigment and textured surfaces, with some areas retaining a mirrored effect…Their figurative elements, luscious blackberries, bats, presents, ribbons, flowers, are visual signs whose meanings seem almost depleted, yet, within their visual\u00a0DNA, they retain a trace of emotion. While being ubiquitous, impersonal, repetitive, and overly cheery, they still hold a degree of symbolic force, not unlike the way the exhibition\u2019s title refers to love, and not unlike the way the works\u2019 brushstrokes refer to the painter and her palette, oils, and brushes.” – Foxy Production, Press Release<\/p>\n
