“Social media sites allow LGBTQ artists to gain independence from typical art outlets, changing the perception of what constitutes queer art.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Beginning May 15th the Leslie Lohman Museum will premiere Interface<\/em>, curated by Walt Cessna, an exhibition which highlights a mix of queer artists working in a variety of mediums who use social media to create a community to exhibit their work. This show is meant to exemplify a shifting time in the art world as social media becomes a medium in and of itself and as a way to not only create art but also connect with the public. Inspired by the 70’s and 80’s punk scene, these artists use social media as a form of rebellion against the traditional white wall gallery system.<\/p>\n

“Just as early \u201880s artists would display their work on rotting piers, abandoned furniture, tenement bathroom walls, and subway billboards, the current generation lets its creativity circulate across the multifaceted online landscape, where a potentially infinite virtual audience can instantly connect with work, repost images and\/or blog about it.” The Director of the museum, Hunter O’Hanian, explains that social media allows artists to take their lives and careers in their own hands.<\/p>\n

Artists being exhibited include Dietmar Busse, Chick Byrne, Isauro Cairo, Bubi Canal, Adrian Carroll, Walt Cassidy, Ben Copperwheat, Derek DeWitt, Jordan Eagles, Alesia Exum, Benjamin Fredrickson, Natasha Gornik, Joel Handorff, Leo Herrera, Erika Keck, Brian Kenny, Naruki Kukita, Scooter La Forge, Brett Lindell, Slava Mogutin, Diego Montoya, Chuck Nitzberg, Maria Pi\u00f1eres, Gio Black Peter, James Salaiz, Ethan Shoshan, William Spangenberg, Tom Taylor, George Towne, and Todd Yeager.<\/p>\n
