This past Friday night I paid a visit to the brand new Alt Space, a store and art gallery located near the Montrose L in Bushwick curated by ALT CITIZEN, a print zine plus music and culture blog. I walked in and was immersed in red neon lighting and was facing the backs of a small crowd as they quietly listened to the majestic dissonance of guitar virtuoso and solo artist Hubble (Ben Greenberg, below). To my right was a wall of intriguing one-of-a-kind fashion items by independent designers such as HEFF, LACTIC, Damage, and Eleen Halvorsen as well as a visually pleasing selection of vinyl, art prints, zines, books, and vintage items. The main floor gallery space featured multiple illustrative works by Brian Leo in the exhibition titled Pancake Ferrari.
I was greeted by the adorable and stylish Phil Gomez (below), who explained that he is the vision behind the fashion choices featured at Alt Space. Most of the designers created unique pieces just for their store, and he seeks to feature items that individuals will walk away with knowing they have purchased something very special that no one else will have. He went on to comment how they want people to feel really comfortable in the space and free to hang out and explore the treasures. I feel a community brewing in there already.
I left with a freshly screen printed tote bag and a copy of their latest print zine. Check out their most recent issue featuring cover story Julian Casablancas + the Voidz and definitely pay a visit to their physical location starting May 15th, say hi, and peruse their treasures.
Please note that Alt Space opens to the public officially May 15, 2015 at noon.
