BARBARISM: A Multimedia Project

Mission:

BARBARISM is a multimedia project developed by Sarah Secunda (left) and Rebecca Katherine Hirsch (right) that produces visual art, time-based media and manifestos designed to expand the understanding and experience of individual multiplicities within absolutist social hierarchies.

BARBARISM aims to challenge injustice through comedy, caricature and art-as-activism. The works create new possibilities of being through the embodiment and performance of possibilities. By expanding the concept of ourselves through alternative representations of gender, we seek to expand the realities of identity, interdependence, power and desire.

When did we start? What made us do it?

BARBARISM began in the hot summer sun of 2010. We were tired of bland, gendered recapitulations of empathy-stanching, non-titillating power relations! So we created what we wanted to see—gender-upending cinema. Come upend with us at our first exhibition at Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia Dec 6-Jan 31!
