Behind the Scenes with Nadya Tolokonnikova of Pussy Riot for Issue 04

We were lucky to have the opportunity to work with Nadya Tolokonnikova of Pussy Riot for our upcoming fourth print issue. For those who are unfamiliar, Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist protest punk rock band and art collective from Moscow. The group gained global notoriety when five members of the group performed inside Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior in 2012. Three of the members — Nadya Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich — were arrested on March 16th and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. On October 10th, following an appeal, Samutsevich was freed on probation and her sentence suspended, but the sentences of the other two women were upheld. This case attained global attention for its ridiculousness and the case was eventually adopted by various human-rights groups, including Amnesty International. After serving 21 months in harsh conditions, Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were released on December 23, 2013, after the State Duma approved an amnesty.
