Brooke Candy: “I’ll wear the glitter that’ll get your attention because underneath that, I actually have something to say”

tumblr_mhtmh1coul1qa42jro1_1280Enter the life of Brooke Candy: born to the former CFO of Hustler, growing up in a well-to-do suburb of LA eating ice cream in Larry Flynt’s office. She moved to the city for an internship with fashion maven Rachel Zoe which didn’t last long (“she’s so ditzy”), taking a job dressing mannequins in Hustler store window fronts. Tiring of the retail gig, she moved along to an 8-month stint as a stripper which didn’t work out either, as she explains “I don’t even like men, and I have to pretend that I’m loving every fucking stupid piece of shit there.” Currently, she’s the face of Diesel accessories, and an up and coming rapper. Brooke Candy has been a lot of things in her 25 years.

You might have seen her co-starring in Grimes’ video for “Genesis” clad in a medal body suit, 6-inch platform Nikes and braids past her ass, but the persona she dons for her own “Opulence” video is even more striking. Opening with a bathroom murder, ending with a high speed car crash, and filled in between with glitter, diamonds, and bare skin, the video is not for the easily offended or faint of heart.

“Opulence” is the title track off her debut EP, and as the title might suggest, there’s a lot of braggadocio happening here. But Candy explains it’s all satirical. Working all of the aforementioned “dirty jobs” rather than accept financial help from her father, Candy is a spokesperson for a cultural awakening in which spirituality trumps cash flow. “I don’t give a fuck about anything in excess,” she explains. “I just want to make art and help people. That’s it. ‘Opulence’ makes fun of all that.”

The “Q” identified rapper has a style that’s been compared to everyone from Lady Gaga to Nicki Minaj to Gwen Stefani, but she’s got a personality all her own, and it’s a strong one. If you’re interested, get to know her a bit better in these pieces on Vulture and Paper Mag.
