Introducing Jef Barbara, the “glam transgender king of Montreal”

Author | Michelle King

Jef Barbara was introduced to me as the ‘glam transgender king of Montreal.’ That introduction came just a few days after Jef’s performance at GayBiGayGay 2014, an all-day music festival that takes place in Austin,TX each year on the Sunday following the madness of SXSW. I was at GBGG this year, but tragically missed Jef’s set, which I’m sure was one that had the crowd swooning, as his performances have been described using such words as “pageantry” and “dramatic” and Jef himself has been likened to a cross between Madonna and James Brown. How can you go wrong with that?

Formerly of Jef and the Holograms, a short-lived project which saw the release of only one EP back in 2009, Jef Barbara’s new wave-inspired full-length solo album Soft to the Touch had it’s US release on March 11, 2014 via Club Roll MusicJef recently dropped a new video for the song “Erection,” which you can watch below. The track is oddly seductive, with a simple beat, some nice doses of synth, and smoothy spoken semi-erotic lyrics. Also check out the video for Bowie-esque ballad “About Singers” and if you like what you’ve seen so far, Jef’s got videos for handful of other tracks off Soft to the Touch up on his YouTube channel.
