Meet Change Agent: A New Global Queer Music Label and Collective

Xeno Genesis is a producer, artist, and founder of Change Agent, an electronic music collective and label comprised of global queer artists in the diaspora. The collective holds an ethos that is unapologetically political while simultaneously sonically divergent. Their music “reflects emotional states and narratives that signal a return to love and brutal vulnerability as a source of strength navigating life as a non-binary queer artist. [My] experimentation with vocal processing explores identity and gender, layered with restrained drumbeats and soft vocal sampling.”

Xeno Genesis just dropped a new four track EP titled This Hearts Alien Land, co-produced with A-0 aka Chris Jefferies, and a music video for their single Empty Room. Self-describing their style as “ambient devastation,” the music video stars Bhenji Ra, a queer artist based in Sydney, Australia. Bhenji’s performance in the video delivers a raw and strikingly beautiful interpretation of the song’s message which is what Xeno calls “a return to love.”

Xeno explains, “the roots of Empty Room and the melodic framework of the tracks on the EP formed in a flat in Berlin in the winter of 2014, where I was staying at the time. At that time I was experiencing a loss, a realization, and a profound shift in my heart’s consciousness and direction. [Empty Room] serves as the intro to my EP as well as my debut as a producer and musician. My intention for the video was to explore feelings of isolation and loss, not just in a romantic relationship but from myself. My lived experience as a non-binary person is ever present between the lines of the lyrics and even in the title of the EP itself. There are parts of the EP where I play with the tone of my vocals, experimenting and shifting away from a binary sound that is rooted in gender. There dissonance, dysphoria, and ultimately a return to love (self, or peer) reign heavily in my music. To say the least would be that this debut is personal, and therefore I feel it is political on a very intimate level. I feel the video explores these intersecting feelings and ideas, in a nuanced way.”
