As I introduce myself to you lovely readers of Posture Mag with my first Musician of the Week contribution, I must begin by practicing full disclosure and admitting that the artist I’m sharing with you today is not only one of my favorite bands and one that you will undoubtably agree is worth the astute attention of your ears and heart, but also an artist that I work with on a professional level and consider a good personal friend. So yes, you may call this piece somewhat biased, but I justify it in that I would want to share this music with you all regardless of any partiality.
NYC’s electro pop outfit Challenger found its beginnings as a recording project when Florida native John Ross was working on the score for Not Waving But Drowning, an independent film written and directed by original Challenger keyboardist Devyn Waitt. Their debut LP The World Is Too Much For Me drew comparisons to Small Black, Tanlines, and Peter Gabriel.
Now performing as a duo (Armin Frank on drums), Challenger will see the release of their sophomore full-length Back to Bellevue early next year and a winter EP entitled Confetti Tree will be available online December 18. Stream the title track from the upcoming LP below and check out videos for “How Are My Thoughts Not My Own?” and “Life in the Paint” from The World is Too Much For Me.
