Recommended this week is Maya Jane Coles, “one of the world’s most influential DJs.”

Maya Jane ColesIn 2012 at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, I gave Maya Jane Coles my very official and prestigious “hottest producer” award. She was 23 at the time and on a fast track to the international success she has become. Now at only 25, Coles has already had more than an impressive musical career, finding her beginnings as a hip-hop producer at age 15 before experimenting with more electronic dub beats and finally discovering her home in house music with her first release “Sick Panda” in 2007.

The London-based producer has continued to amass top-rated singles over the years with many tracks topping the Beatport and Resident Advisor charts and gaining attention from the likes of BBC, Mixmag, and RCRD LBL, amongst others. She has seen her name listed in production credits for artists such as Alpines and Little Boots, and adopted the dubstep alias Nocturnal Sunshine as well as making up one half of the electronic duo She Is Danger. She’s certainly kept herself busy, playing live in over 40 countries and knocking out remixes for artists as diverse as Florence & The Machine to Ella Fitzgerald to Massive Attack and The xx.

In 2011, she was was the staff pick for ‘Artist of the Year’ at the Beatport Awards, DJ Mag’s ‘Producer of the Year′, Mixmag’s ‘Best Breakthrough DJ′, and FACT’s ‘Best Female Artist’. 2012 saw her continuing to gain momentum with Rolling Stone listing her as one of the world’s 25 most influential DJs. And with the release of her first full-length Comfort in July of 2013, Coles shows no signs of slowing down her production work or the BPMs. The album features guests such as Tricky, Karin Park, and Miss Kittin, and you can snag it from iTunes or stream in on Soundcloud.
