Recommended This Week: The NYC quintet Lucius, currently on tour with Tegan and Sara

My introduction to the stunning voices of Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe, who make up two-fifths of NYC quintet Lucius came via the epic single “Sonsick” off composer Ellis Ludwig-Leone’s debut album as San Fermin (also worth checking out). Their ability to synchronize harmonies and combine the power of their voices in unison might be explainable by the nine years they’ve been singing together, but it’s beyond impressive nonetheless.

Lucius began in 2008 as a duo between Wolfe and Laessig, who also handle synths and keys. Through a series of fortunate events and introductions in the musical breeding ground of Brooklyn’s Ditmas Park, the group has since expanded to include work on drums and guitar from Dan Molad, Peter Lalish and Andrew Burri. Blending together elements of pop, rock, and even folk on their debut album Wildewoman, which dropped last year on Mom + Pop, Lucius are currently touring with Tegan and Sara and will continue on the road into the summer with dates with The Head and the Heart as well as Sara Bareilles and performances at Governors Ball, Newport Folk Festival, and Lollapalooza.

If you desire a recommendation from someone with a bit more clout than myself, look no further than NPR’s Bob Boilen who (in 2013) called this “the best pop music of my year.” Read on for tour dates, and check out official videos for “Turn it Around” and “Go Home,” both taken from Wildewoman.
