Sometimes there is just something so uplifting about a really good indie pop track. On their debut Galore LP, Thumpers serve up more than one of these delights. The opening cut “Marvel” is a prime example of music that fills your soul and puts a smile on your face. Followed by the single “Dancing’s Done,” which the UK duo first released in February of 2013 on an EP of the same title, and then “Sound of Screams” which is about as anthemic as they come, the opening sequence on Galore is a promising one.
Marcus Pepperell and John Hamson Jr. are childhood friends who have been playing music together for quite some time. Thumpers is their newest collaboration, after previous bands Antihero and Pull Tiger Tail and Hamson’s side work with Noah and the Whale and Friendly Fires. With two EPs and a full-length under their belt since starting this project in early 2013 and having already opened for MS MR, Chvrches, and Two Door Cinema Club, it seems like the two have finally hit the right chord.
The record is aggressively playful, packed with engaging percussion and light, floating harmonies that woo you and swoon you to the point of maybe humming along but not necessarily pulling your feet to the dance floor. Enjoy it in the sunshine, if your part of the world has any this time of year. The album may have come out Feb 11, but it’s a summer release at heart.
