Two of my lifelong passions are horror and drag. The fantasy. The taboo. The makeup! I just can’t get enough of either.
With that being said, when I met Severely Mame outside of Sugarland during the Mr(s) Williamsburg semi-finals and she first told me about her party, Scream Queen, I knew I had to check it out.
Held on the first Wednesday of every month at Don Pedro’s in Brooklyn, Scream Queen features a cult classic film followed by a horror-themed drag show (based on said movie) and a gothic dance party.
In other words, it is like Severely Mame extracted my DNA and spewed it forth into a perfect night out.
“Scream Queen is the child of Macy Rodman’s weekly drag night Bathsalts:A Drag Show for Fuck Ups! and my love of horror,” explains Severely Mame. “I don’t want to be a famous drag queen. I want to be a famous horror hostess so Scream Queen is the first stepping stone in making that happen! I loved the idea of horror drag outside of the month of October. Halloween has never been just celebrated one month a year in my world!”
Scream Queen just held it’s third installment with the screening of Dario Argento’s giallo classic, Suspiria. The drag component was subtitled Suzy, Do You Know Anything About Drag Queens? A debaucherous night of drag and performance went well into the other side of the night after the humble screening of the film. Nudity, burning bibles, and blood were in high demand. Everyone who attended secured eternal damnation in Hell, but what a fucking party it’s gonna be.
In addition to hostess Severely Mame, other featured performers included Macy Rodman, Lucy Balls, and Lena Marquise. These performers will also be terrorizing the east coast when the Scream Queen concept goes on tour during the bewitching month of October. Stops will be across the east coast with dates in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
Lucky for us New Yorkers, we can experience the next Scream Queen on July 3rd when Severely Mame presents Psycho Beach Party: Moonbathing With Mame. Surely it will be way better than ringing in the Fourth of July with BBQ’s and fireworks.
What else is in the works for the future of Scream Queen? Only time will tell as the party evolves and grows.
Severely Mame Presents SCREAM QUEEN first Wednesday of every month at Don Pedro’s 90 Manhattan Ave., Brooklyn, NY. Starts around 10pm.
