“The work suggests, as Russell Ferguson writes, “the tension between the comfort of the group and the desire for individual autonomy.” – Press Release, Marian Goodman Gallery
Juan Muñoz (June 17, 1953 – August 28, 2001) was a Spanish sculptor who has exhibited internationally (including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Tate Modern in London, and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C.). He is known for being a self proclaimed “story teller” and for breaking the sculptural traditions at the time by creating immersive installations that contain narratives and relationships between the subject, the viewer, and the interior. He worked primarily in papier-maché, bronze, and resin.
It was later in his career when he began to incorporate architecture into his exhibitions by transforming the space into a labyrinth environment such as in Double Bind at the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. Further, he was very interested in auditory works and collaborated with Gavin Bryars in A Man in a Room, Gambling, and with Alberto Iglesias in Building for Music.
Three key works by Muñoz will be featured at the Marian Goodman Gallery: the sculptural installations Thirteen Laughing at Each Other, 2001, Many Times, 1999 and a Figure Hanging from One Foot, 2001. The exhibition will be on view from December 9, 2014 until January 31, 2015.
