In the wake of FIT’s A Queer History of Fashion: From the Closet to the Catwalk exhibition and complementary Fashion Symposium, I decided to get together with two experts in the area myself. Thus, I invited Anita from dapperQ (left) and Sonny from Owear (right) over to my humble Bushwick abode to discuss the topic “What is Queer Fashion?”
I proposed a number of questions drawing from feedback I’ve gotten over time such as “Is Queer Fashion Independent of Sexuality?” “Are Labels Helpful or Hurtful?” and “Is Mass Production of a ‘Queer’ or ‘Androgynous’ Style Beneficial to Society?”
This is not an easy topic, but Sonny and Anita handle each question with careful thought and attention. They also reveal their predictions on where the future of queer fashion is headed.
