Gloriously returning to us after a somewhat-significant hiatus, cult electro pop collective YACHT, have released the first single off their upcoming new EP Where Does This Disco?, out November 11 on Downtown Records.
While on first listen, one might think “Works Like Magic” is a straight-forward number about an intimate relationship, listening closer will make the meaning a bit more ambiguous. Are we talking about sex here, or technology? Or both?
YACHT explain in an interview with Billboard, “The science fiction writer J.G. Ballard once said that “sex times technology equals the future.” We argue that sex and technology coexist in our present: we touch, we push buttons, we seek intimacy in screens. When we connect, it works like magic.”
The track is club ready and probably a bit more accessible than most of what you find on their last album (Shangri-La, 2011), but it’s still got the same elements of call-and-response, hand claps, and funky beats. It’s unquestionably YACHT, and we can’t wait for more.
